Bristol
European Green Capital 2015 (Bristol 2015)
2015 is a special year for everyone who lives in and
around my home city, Bristol . It is even more important for someone like
me, who cares about the environment.
This is my previous article birdgirl's
blog post on Bristol
There have been a number of people chosen to be Ambassadors for Bristol Bristol 2015, which are an amazing group of conservationists, environmentalists and children’s cartoon characters. They include Kevin McCloud, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Stephanie Hilborne (CEO The Wildlife Trusts), Tony Juniper, Simon King, Miranda Krestovnikoff and Shaun the Sheep! See the full list (with me at the top!) Bristol 2015 Ambassadors
As well as this group of dedicated professionals, I have also been chosen to be a Bristol 2015 Ambassador. It is a fantastic honour and I hope that I can use it to interest more young people in nature and the environment.
My Bristol 2015 Ambassador entry is:
Mya-Rose Craig AKA Birdgirl, age 13, is a naturalist, conservationist, writer and speaker. The Chew Valley School pupil writes the successful birdgirl blog, with posts about nature and the environment from around the world.
First appearing in BBC4’s “Twitchers a Very British Obsession” as a delightful 7 year old, she has been listed with George Ezra and Maisie Williams as one of Bristol’s most influential young people.
One of the biggest events is that Bristol 2015 will be taking delegates to the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21) starting on 30 November 2015. The day before COP21 starting, on Sunday 29 November 2015 there will be climate change rallies around the world, including in Bristol. I will be addressing the rally and hopefully inspiring other young people to want to save the environment.
What is European Green
Capital 2015
That means that the European Commission
has recognised Bristol ’s
success in creating a green city with a high quality of life. This prestigious
award gives Bristol a unique
opportunity to further enhance the city’s reputation for creativity, culture
and innovation. It was awarded due to its ability to demonstrate rapid progress
and continuing ambition, across a wide range of quality of life, environmental
and green business aspects.
Each year, one city is crowned European
Green Capital to recognise its environmental achievements, future commitments
and ability to inspire others. This is the first time that a UK city has
been chosen.
The European Green Capital Award was set
up to reward cities achieving high environmental standards and encourage them
to commit to further environmental improvement and sustainable development.
The winning city has to demonstrate a
vision for the future which will inspire other cities to take similar action.
And it needs to be a replicatable model, promoting best practice to
all other European cities.
The will be lots of benefits
for Bristol .
Not only will it attract investment and visitors to the city, but it will
reinforce its reputation as a leading sustainable city in the UK and Europe .
