Winter Wonderland

As well as my obsession for birds and wildlife, I love writing and particularly writing poetry.

This is a poem I wrote and submitted on 24/12/2015  to the A Focus on Nature (AFON) Winter of Wildlife competition.

I was one of only two people who entered with poems for this competition:

A Young Birder's poetry

My poem reflects the mood of how I imagine a winter wonderland and I have added photographs taken in my village during heavy snow in February 2009.  This was one of the few weekends during our "Big Year" that we did not go out birding. I've included photographs of me tobogganing on the hill behind our house - possibly the best place in the country to toboggan.

Winter Wonderland

Walking in a winter wonderland
In a smooth white-filled world
Not in the grey city or the green country but in a white wonderland
Tamed creatures venture to the garden, desperate for food
Elegant droplets envelope the branch, the tree, the woods
Red cheeks, red scarf
Wet boots, frozen fingers
Out in the cold is
Nature at its brightest
Dead branches, dark branches
Everywhere; puddles of sludge
Robin’s stark red breast in the dull, melting snow
Loud calls of children sledging
A deer silently steps through the woods
Never making a sound as the
Dancing snowflakes are falling
